INDONESIA: ENGLISH LANGUAGE ISLAMIC COLLEGE OPENS

Jakarta, 6 March. (AKI) - The first Islamic college to use English instead of
Arabic as its main language has opened its doors in Indonesia. The Nawesea
school, near Yogyakarta in Central Java, is seeking an international approach
and wants to revolutionise the concept of pesantren (Islamic schools). "In the
past, mastering English for Muslims was categorized as mubah - neither
forbidden nor required - but it is now dloruri, compulsory," school director
Yudian Wahyudi told the Jakarta Post.
