Hi Kate,
   I use the IPA a lot when I'm training teachers in dialectology. I use a free font from the Summer Institute of Linguistics. You can find fonts on their website here: http://www.sil.org/computing/catalog/show_software_catalog.asp?by=cat&name=Font
  I use the Doulos SIL font.
