Educating the educators

NEW DELHI: The British Council here is hosting two development seminars
for English language teachers this coming Tuesday and Wednesday. The
sessions will be conducted by Mary Spratt, a renowned English language
teaching consultant who has co-authored more than 17 books aimed at
English language learners and teachers. Through the seminar, Mary Spratt
seeks to raise some pertinent questions, including whether it is a mistake
to correct mistakes in classrooms! The programme includes a series of
interactive presentations for education policy makers and school and
college principals. A workshop for teachers will look at techniques for
error correction and how and when to use them.

"Professional development seminars for English language teachers are
important as English is traditionally taught as an academic subject. But
now employers are asking for strong skills in English business
communication from graduates who are learning English along with other
subjects. In schools and colleges up and down the country English teachers
are taking a new look at their curriculum and classroom methodology,''
said an organiser.
