One of the main challenges in the globalization of language teaching and
learning lies in transcending cultural boundaries. Cultural differences and
sensitivities need to be properly addressed for effective teaching and learning
to take place. Research on language teaching and learning in different cultural
contexts is, thus, of great significance as it helps explicate the common and
cultural-specific issues that are faced by language educators. At the same
time, it highlights the expectations of those who are involved in language
teaching and learning, particularly the learners themselves.

Nonetheless, there is richness in diversity. Much can be learnt from the
different cultural contexts. If the successful practices of these systems can
be expounded and shared, it would provide valuable insights into one’s own
system and further enhance language teaching and learning. This conference
would provide an opportunity for the centre to share its findings as well as to
promote the Islamicisation of the teaching and learning of languages.
