Teaching math to English-language learners

The Lamar University Departments of Mathematics and Professional Pedagogy and
Region 5 Education Service Center hosted 23 high school and middle school
teachers from across Southeast Texas as part of The Texas State University
System Mathematics for English-Language Learners Initiative.

Sessions of the second annual Professional Development Conference were June 20-
22 on the Lamar campus and at the Region 5 Education Service Center in
Beaumont. More than 100 Houston teachers will attend a second workshop in
August, to be conducted by Lamar at the Region 4 Education Service Center in
Houston.

The initiative is a multi-year, multimillion-dollar effort aimed at developing
instructional resources designed to increase the effectiveness of mathematics
instruction for students who are English- language learners (ELL), said Sandra
Richardson, assistant professor of mathematics and a co-primary investigator
for the project.
