Foreign-born pupils set to face new English test in language move

THE Department of Education is introducing tests in English for newcomer pupils
to primary and post-primary schools.

Schools are getting more teachers to help foreign-born children build their
language skills - but the extra resources are linked to examinations to assess
pupils' progress.

As part of a wider Government commitment, the department is lifting the cap on
the number of teachers employed to teach English to non-nationals in any one
school.
