School children give us a language lesson in British inadequacy

 

The English have long had an aversion to foreign languages. While our European neighbours have busied themselves perfecting a whole raft of multilingual skills, the numbers of pupils in this country opting to learn French, Spanish and German have been falling.

According to latest figures, fewer than half of all pupils took a modern European language GCSE, plummeting from 83.3 per cent in 2000 to 48.3 per cent this year.
