Assistant Professor/Instructor

Program in English as a Second Language 

Institute of Linguistics, English as a Second Language, and Slavic Languages

       And Literatures

 

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities seeks candidates for a position as visiting or contract Assistant Professor for the 2008-2009 academic year in the English as a Second Language academic program, in the Institute of Linguistics, English as a Second Language, and Slavic Languages and Literatures of the College of Liberal Arts.  This temporary appointment carries with it the possibility of renewal.  The position will be 100% for the nine-month period of August 25, 2008 - May 24, 2009 with a salary that is commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The person should have a specialization in applied linguistics (e.g., teaching methods, English phonetics and grammar, second-language acquisition) with a specific focus on ESL, and will be expected to teach five course sections from among the following: Basics in Teaching ESL (TESL 3001) - a service learning methods course for undergraduate students, Language Analysis for Teachers of ESL (TESL 5401 and 5402), a year-lon!
 g course on the phonology, morphology and grammar of the English language, and Practicum in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL 5722).  Other responsibilities will include office hours relating to their courses and an active program of scholarly research. 

 

Preferred qualifications include a Ph.D. in ESL, applied linguistics, or a related field by the date of the appointment; and three years of instructional experience in English as a second-language teacher education, including ESL methods, materials, and language analysis. Required qualifications include A.B.D. status; a specialization in English as a second-language teaching and learning; one year of instructional experience in English as a second-language teacher education; and evidence of excellence in teaching and research in one or more areas of specialization listed above.  Candidates who are A.B.D. will be appointed at the rank of instructor.
