Critical Discourse Analysis & Social Research

Summer School

The summer school is an interdisciplinary course for PhD students, post-docs and academics at an early stage in their career,

who are using critical discourse analysis (CDA) in their social research.



Course Tutors:

Professor Norman Fairclough, Emeritus Professor/IAS Professorial Fellow

Professor Bob Jessop, Professor of Sociology/IAS Director

Dr Ngai-Ling Sum, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations

Professor Ruth Wodak, Professor of Discourse Studies

The course will introduce two approaches to CDA (those of Fairclough and Wodak) and a version of Cultural Political Economy which incorporates CDA (Jessop and Sum), with examples of their application. It will also offer participants feedback and guidance on their own research.

An indicative list of themes likely to be addressed: changes in governance, politics and the state, political-economic transformations, knowledge-based economy and knowledge society, competitiveness, social change associated with the European Union, identity politics (inclusion/exclusion) and migration.
