Teacher strike work over low pay, deplorable conditions

 

Hundreds of teachers of two privately-run foreign language schools in Chengdu, including one which was formerly state-run, went on strike on Nov 5, protesting against low salaries and deplorable working conditions, reported China's official China Daily newspaper Nov 7. They were joined by students who sympathised with their cause.

The initial protest followed a meeting between teachers at the Chengdu Foreign Languages School, owned by the Chengdu-based Derui Group, and Yan Yude, chairman of the group, who is in this year's list of the richest men in China. Yan offered an increase of 1,000 yuan ($147) per month for the average teacher, but the teachers rejected it, pointing out that many State-owned schools in the city had recently given their teachers a monthly pay raise of 3,000 yuan per month.
