Alberta's ESL population exploding; parents worry kids have poor English skills

 

Between 1988 and 2008, the number of ESL students across the province more than tripled, from 14,673 to 48,346.

 

Some of the greatest growth has been with the Calgary Board of Education, which has had its ESL population increase by more than 100 per cent over the past five years. Now, nearly one in four CBE students is studying English as their second, third or fourth language.

 

"We are very proud of our diversity in our schools in the Calgary board. I think that's the beauty of public education, that we welcome all children and we're constantly adapting to respond to the changing needs of our schools," said Carol Berndt, English language and learning specialist with the CBE.
