Understanding Language Development

 

Most children go through different stages as they learn to speak, some so fleeting that parents are not always aware of them. But these brief windows can reveal important insights into the process of word retrieval.

 

For example, early in development, children often build their word bank slowly. Then, at about 18 to 20 months of age, they have a sudden brief vocabulary spurt, where many words are learned, and used, speedily.
