Discussion: Bilingualism and Language Policy in the US

Dear Charles,

Thank you for your input about the Edling List. As you know, Edling serves many functions. Discussion is one of them. It also serves as a forum for announcing events, news, calls for papers, etc. Different members have different needs of the list, and I try to do my best to balance them.

In this case, I received feedback from several list members regarding the volume of messages relating to the discussion (which lasted about two weeks). Since few comments had been made toward the end of this time, it seemed reasonable to wind down the discussion. The intent was certainly not to "limit the free expression of ideas." Rather, the intent was to round off the discussion just as one does after the Q&A portion of a conference talk. Edling is a moderated scholarly forum.

List members are absolutely encouraged to post their ideas, comments, announcements, etc. at any time. Likewise, feedback about the list is also always welcome.

Best,

Francis

I'm sorry but I don't understand the desire to "officially close the current discussion" Francis. This seems extremely paternalistic and condescending to say the least. Forums such as this one are meant to continue discussion, not to abort it after someone like yourself decides it is over. This is not "moderating", it is controlling in the worst sense of the word and smacks of limiting the free expression of ideas and dare we say it, free speech itself. Don't "close"this discussion. Let it roll!

Dear Edling list members,

Thank you to all those who participated in the discussion about English Requirement for Naturalization in the US question that I raised about two weeks ago. Your postings and recommendations of some key readings regarding this subject are much appreciated.

As an African proverb states " The river is crooked because there was no guideline to follow by the time it began its course." Let hope that with optimism and dedication in our respective fields, we can provide fresh insight to the public and the future generation of scholars since we all want to live in a world of social justice, human right and dignity.

Danke,

Thank you to David Balosa for making a thought-provoking post, to Myrna Goldstein for opening a lively discussion about it, and to all the list members who participated in the discussion. It is wonderful to see the Edling List serve as a forum for scholarly conversation about current hot button issues in our field. The generally civil and professional nature of the postings in this discussion is also much appreciated.

As list moderator, I will officially close the current discussion and, with the previous post, let David have the final thought on it. Discussion about any topic related to educational linguistics is, of course, always welcome. All list members are encouraged to post to the list books of interest, current events in language in education, calls for papers, or topics for discussion.

All the best,

Francis Hult
