ALA 2014 - Language Awareness: Achievements and Challenges

First circular and Call for papers



Hedmark University College is organizing the 12th International Conference of the Association for Language Awareness (ALA 2014) in Hamar, Norway from July 1-4, 2014. The theme of the conference is “Language Awareness: Achievements and Challenges”, and the deadline for abstract submission is November 15, 2013.
Academic programme



The programme will consist of full paper presentations, work-in-progress reports and poster sessions. A pre-conference workshop will be arranged for PhD students, as an opportunity to engage with peers and senior scholars.

Agneta Svalberg (University of Leicester): Language Awareness Research: Where we are now



Ofelia García (City University of New York): Language Awareness in Teacher Education



Kenneth Hyltenstam (Stockholm University): Language Awareness in Polyglots



Arne Torp (University of Oslo): The Language Situation in the Nordic Countries

Conference venue

ALA 2014 will be held at Hedmark University College in Hamar, Norway. Hamar is located one hour north of Oslo Airport, and is easily accessible by train. Sitting on the shores of Norway’s biggest lake, Mjøsa, it has beautiful surroundings. The campus is in the town center with easy access to hotels, restaurants and shops, as well as recreational areas by the lake. Call for papers
We welcome abstracts that address any aspects of research on language awareness. In accordance with the conference theme, submissions are encouraged to focus on the state of the art within relevant research areas, and on challenges and future avenues of research related to language awareness. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- the role of language awareness in
- first, second and other language acquisition
- language learning and teaching
- teacher education
- language contact situations
- work place communication
- etc.
- the relation of language awareness to
       - language policy
       - intra- and inter-language variation
       - modern technology and digital communication



Papers will be allocated 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion. Posters (max. size A0, portrait format) will be presented in a special session and remain on display throughout the conference.
