That's interesting. However, I'm a bit concerned by a phenomenon whereby people read this sort of report, which rightly identifies certain languages as being of particular strategic interest on a national level, and translate it into personal action. That tendency is most worryingly seen in Sweden in the belief that because English has an incredibly important role, it is not useful to invest time and energy in learning other languages.

Any given individual with competence in a particular language is likely to be able to find a use for that language, but that message is easily overshadowed by a perception that some languages are more important than others.

“Languages for the Future”

The Languages for the Future report identifies Spanish, Arabic, French, Mandarin Chinese, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Japanese as the languages most vital to the UK over the next 20 years. They were chosen based on economic, geopolitical, cultural and educational factors including the needs of UK businesses, the UK’s overseas trade targets, diplomatic and security priorities, and prevalence on the internet.
