Dear Educational Linguists:

Virginia International University's School of Education welcomes you to join us for this week's event in our Voices from the Field Speaker Series: a panel presentation on Promoting Communication Skills and Workforce Readiness through Co-Teaching.

*         Date: Thursday, February 6, 2014

*         Time: 2:00-3:00pm

* Location: Waples Mill Conference Room, 11200 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030

Three distinguished panelists will be speaking about their implementation of the Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) model at Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School in Washington, DC:

*         Dr. Ryan Monroe, Principal

*         Heather Tatton-Harris, Curriculum Coordinator

* Carole Fuller, Professional Development Specialist

By pairing content and language/literacy instructors as co-teachers in a single classroom, I-BEST helps students acquire crucial communication and career skills in the context of real-world situations, providing linguistic and professional training simultaneously.

The speakers will discuss:

* The mission and history of Carlos Rosario School-nationally and internationally recognized as a successful model for comprehensive adult education programs

* Research conducted by the speakers to determine the value of co-teaching and the feasibility of different approaches to implementation

* Carlos Rosario School's career pathways, course offerings, and goals in the implementation of co-teaching

* Co-teachers' experiences in designing their roles and working together productively
