Dear colleagues,

The University of Brussels (VUB) will host a colloquium on cross-linguistic aspects of complexity in second language research on 18-19 December 2014.

The goal of the event is to bring together junior researchers working on linguistic complexity and related constructs in the study of L2 structure, use and development.

The event will be structured around individual presentations, with ample time for discussion.

There will also be keynote presentations by more senior researchers, including by Benedikt Szmrecsanyi (KU Leuven) and Gabriele Pallotti (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia).

Topics of interest include theoretical and methodological contributions to the conceptualisation, measurement and comparison of complexity (and related notions such as difficulty) across languages, the cross-linguistic study of complexity in SLA, as well as the advantages and limitations of the complexity construct for L2 research.

May I ask you to forward this information to junior researchers who may be interested, either at your own university or at other universities?

Interested researchers are asked to send the title and an abstract of their presentation (400 words, excl. references) by 20 June 2014 to <bastien.de.clercq at vub.ac.be<mailto:bastien.de.clercq at vub.ac.be>> and <mbuysse at vub.ac.be<mailto:mbuysse at vub.ac.be>>.
Notifications of acceptance will be sent in the course of July 2014.

Of course, more senior researchers such as yourself are also welcome to attend the colloquium (and possibly even give a talk yourselves).

Unfortunately our budget is limited and we can only reimburse participants' accommodation (one or two nights) and subsistence costs, not travel expenses.

We also intend to publish a selection of the day's contributions in a thematic journal issue or edited volume afterwards.

I look forward to hearing from you or from interested junior researchers soon.

Kind regards,

Alex Housen
