THE CALL:
The Bilingual Research Journal (BRJ) is the premier peer reviewed journal of the National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE). The purpose of this themed issue is to explore research, theoretical orientations and methodologies that extend Richard Ruiz’s important impact in language planning and bilingual education. Guest editors are interested in receiving abstracts from scholars whose scholarship is deeply impacted by the contributions of this eminent scholar. In 1984 Professor Richard Ruiz wrote a seminal article, Orientations in Language Planning, for the NABE Journal (now known as the BRJ). This publication influenced scholarship nationally and internationally. In the mid 90s, Dr. Ruiz was editor of the BRJ. For the 2016 call the guest editors seek manuscripts that offer theoretical analyses as well as research based arguments about language planning in an increasingly diverse and globalized world. How can educational research in language studies account for dynamic interactions, practices, and engagements of children, youth, and/or adults in schools, churches, and community organizations? How do language policies and practices enable not only analysis, but also transformative change? We ask that you consider these questions, among many others, as you theorize the meanings, purposes, and values of the work of Richard Ruiz. In your research abstract (see below), we ask that you are attentive to the ways theoretically sophisticated work offers promise to PreK-16 curricular planning, language policies in formal and informal contexts, teacher education and teacher practice.

PROPOSED TIMELINE:
·         Oct 15, 2015: Potential contributors are to submit a short abstract (approximately 1-1½ typed, single-spaced pages). Please describe the overall purpose of the proposed article and its focus in direct relation to the theme of the journal issue. Be sure to attach a reference list to your abstract and provide full contact information. Contributors will be notified of the status of their research abstract within one month of the deadline, Nov. 15, 2015. Invited contributors will be given information about deadlines, length, and structure.

·         February 15, 2016: Contributors should be prepared to submit a complete manuscript by mid February for external peer review evaluations and feedback.

·         April 1, 2016: Notification to contributors of conditional acceptance of complete manuscript and any needed revisions.

·         May 15, 2016: Final revisions of articles will be completed by this date; the theme journal issue is due to be published in August 2016.

SUBMISSION AND REVIEW PROCESS:
All submissions should be made to the current home institution for the BRJ at the University of Utah.
Submit an electronic copy of your abstract along with a brief cover letter to the guest editors that indicates your interest in the special issue to the following address: brj at utah.edu.

Please note that acceptance of abstracts does not guarantee publication of the manuscript. Invited manuscripts will be reviewed by the guest editors and assigned to external reviewers.
