Building Educational Communities of Inclusion: Cultural Proficiency and Equity

June 1–2, 2016

8:30 am – 3:30 pm ET

Center for Applied Linguistics, Washington, DC

Learn effective strategies to create educational access and opportunity for all students by promoting cultural proficiency and equity.

With ever-increasing diversity in schools and communities around the country, the need to create educational access and opportunity for every student has never been greater. Promoting cultural proficiency and equity is an effective approach that provides insights and tools to support positive cross-cultural interactions in our schools.

Please join CAL for this two-day institute designed to help educators and administrators learn how to implement the best practices of cultural proficiency. Participants will learn about various approaches to cultural proficiency. Broadly speaking, cultural proficiency allows individuals and organizations to interact effectively with people who differ from them, particularly those from non-dominant cultural contexts. It is a developmental approach for addressing the issues that emerge in diverse environments.

Participants will explore stages along a continuum of cultural proficiency that represent ways of perceiving and responding to differences, recognizing other perspectives, balancing values, and creating a culture of mutual respect.

Both individuals and organizations are at various levels of awareness, knowledge and skills along a cultural proficiency continuum. Participants will learn how developing beliefs and behaviors can enable effective and positive crosscultural interactions in the classroom and beyond. At the organizational level, participants will access and create tools to ensure that equity-building is at the core of every school decision.

This informative institute is designed for PreK-12 educators, administrators and community practitioners, such as social workers, counselors, and after-school specialists. CAL encourages teams of educators and practitioners to attend.
