Dear Educational Linguists,

Each year, WATESOL (the Washington DC-area affiliate of TESOL International) brings together local, national, and international teachers, teacher educators, program administrators, materials and curriculum developers, language assessment experts, graduate students, researchers, and other professionals in fields related to the learning and teaching of English as a second/foreign/international language.

All are welcome to attend this year's Fall Conference, with reduced registration rates available for students and members of WATESOL!

This year's conference features:


- More than 40 practice-oriented sessions, poster presentations, and exhibitors on K-12 education, adult education, higher education, and teacher training in TESOL (full schedule available here: https://goo.gl/OF8GeF)

- A keynote on 21st-century literacy skills and a workshop on using children's literature to teach creative reading and writing to English language learners by Dr. Misty Adoniou of the University of Canberra (details here: http://www.watesolassociation.org/page-1709317)

- Special Interest Group (SIG) roundtables and a meeting of WATESOL's NNEST (non-native English speaking teachers) leadership group

- Breakfast, lunch, and coffee hour (included with registration) and a networking dinner with the WATESOL Board and keynote speaker (tickets for the latter must be purchased in advance)


Bio of Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Misty Adoniou is an Associate Professor in Language, Literacy, and TESOL at the University of Canberra. She has received numerous teaching awards, including a National Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning and the 2014 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence.

She was a lead writer for the national English as an Additional Language Teachers Resource, which accompanies the Australian Curriculum, and has served on several national advisory boards in Australia, including the federal government's Equity and Diversity Advisory Group and the Orientation Consultative Committee advising the federal government on the settlement needs of refugees.

Dr. Adoniou believes in the advocacy power of professional voices and the importance of professional associations in corralling that strength. She has served as the President of two national teachers associations - TESOL Greece and the Australian Council of TESOL Associations. She is currently on the Board of Directors of TESOL International.

Her most recent research projects have been curriculum reviews conducted for the International Baccalaureate Organization and the International Organization for Migration. She also works closely with schools around the world leading professional learning in spelling, grammar, and writing, most recently in the UK, Hong Kong, and Greece.
