Call for Papers – CUALHE 2017
The annual meeting of the Consortium on Useful Assessment in Language and Humanities Education (CUAHLE) will take place on October 28-29, 2017 on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and invites proposals for paper presentations on one of the following three topics:

  1. Assessment of experiential learning outcomes. In light of the increasing number of ways that students are learning outside the traditional classroom, there is an imperative to better understand the context, the goals, and the outcomes of these more experiential learning environments. Possible paper topics could include, but are not limited to, the assessment of the following:
     *   study abroad
     *   community-engaged learning
     *   technologically enhanced international partnerships
     *   game-based learning
     * language learning in the linguistic landscape
  2. Text-based assessment in language studies programs. Second language (L2) studies in recent years has seen a growing interest in the role that texts play in L2 development. Traced back in large part to the New London Group’s (1996) call for increased pedagogical attention to the multiple media and modalities that language users now must mediate in order to communicate meaningfully, this “literacy turn” in the profession has resulted in both an expanding understanding of texts as well as an increased focus on fundamental aspects of textual analysis (e.g., context, author, audience, purpose, structure). Relatively absent from the discussions about text-based approaches to L2 development are the assessment practices needed to understand the types of student learning that take place through textual engagement. This strand therefore invites papers that examine the assessment of student learning and L2 development within text-based pedagogies and curricula. Possible paper topics could include, but are not limited to, the assessment of the following:
     * Text-based writing and speaking tasks
     *   Reading-to-write instruction
     *   Genre-based pedagogy
     *   Literary analysis
     *   Multiple literacies
     *   Humanistic inquiry/humanities learning
  3. Useful assessment practices in language and humanities education. This strand is intended to be more open-ended and inclusive of work in useful language and humanities assessment not covered by the previous two strands. Possible paper topics could include, but are not limited to, the following:
     * Purpose, goals, and outcomes of student learning outcomes assessment
     * Outcomes assessment in different educational contexts (e.g., community college; undergraduate/graduate program; pre-professional programs)
     * Outcomes assessment at distinct points in education (e.g., first-year experience; completion of language requirement; major/minor requirements; graduate degrees/requirements)
     * Outcomes assessment of different abilities, knowledge, and dispositions, e.g.:
        * cultural (e.g., intercultural competence; historical knowledge)
        * humanistic (e.g., critical thinking; aesthetic capacity)
        *   linguistic (e.g., proficiency; pragmatic/sociolinguistic competence)

This year’s meeting spans two days and consists of presentations and discussion on the three aforementioned assessment-related strands: (1) assessment of experiential learning outcomes; (2) text-based assessment in language studies programs; and (3) useful assessment of language and humanities education. The conference begins with an opening luncheon on Saturday, October 28th, followed by presentations and discussion. The first day concludes with a late-afternoon keynote address by John Norris and dinner. Presentations and discussions continue on Sunday, October 29th. Discussions will be facilitated by an invited scholar with expertise in the respective strand. The conference ends with a box lunch and a “strategy session” (optional for participants). Visit the conference website for more information: https://sites.google.com/view/cualhe2017. CUALHE would like to thank the Assessment and Evaluation Language Resource Center (AELRC) for its support of the conference.

The Consortium on Useful Assessment in Language and Humanities Education (CUALHE) is an inter-institutional collaborative effort that aims to share and to enhance useful assessment practices developed by college language and humanities programs and to develop a cadre of scholars who can serve as assessment experts/facilitators. The aim of the Consortium to foster a culture of reflective teaching in higher education and to support research into student learning, thereby making useful assessment a regular part of the academic modus operandi.
The goals of the annual meeting and conference are: (a) to provide a forum for those working on outcomes assessment (and related endeavors) to present and exchange ideas, and (b) to enable strategic planning of the Consortium organization and activities.
