Language, media and politics: The pragmatics of political discourse

*Bandung: Journal of the Global South* welcomes submissions to the thematic
series on 'Language, media and politics: The pragmatics of political
discourse'.

In this post-colonial era, the political advancement of the Global South
can be largely reflected in and at the same time forms its political
discourse, which to a great extent, diverges from the discourses of the
developed Global North, in particular Western Europe and North America.
This special issue therefore calls for a concerted effort to explore the
new theoretical input and methods of political discourse analysis and its
application to the study of political development in the Global South.

Political discourse is an interdisciplinary subject of study, situated at
the intersection of language, media and politics. Political discourse, in
its definition, underlines the significance of language in the study of
politics, wherein language can not only be used as a device but also
consists of the object of study in politics. What’s more, with the
advancement of technology, media has been, in addition to serving as a
platform displaying political talks and texts, playing an increasingly
important and sometimes even dominant role in modern and/or post-colonial
politics.

Upholding the journal’s spirit of promoting cross-disciplinary research,
this special issue of Bandung: Journal of the Global South is dedicated to
the integrative study of language, media and politics. It aims to address
the latest theoretical and methodological developments in political
discourse research and their applications. Manuscripts either adopting a
global or comparative perspective, or with a specific regional or
institutional focus on the Global South are welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:

   - New developments in the theoretical frameworks of political discourse
   analysis from a pragmatic perspective
   - Innovative methods of political discourse analysis via the lenses of
   language and/or media
   - Special features of political discourse in the Global South and/or
current trends of political discourse in the Global North
   - Localised political discourse analysis, or political discourse that
focuses on a specific region or institution
   - The (changing) role(s) of media in modern and/or post-colonial
   political discourse
   - Analysis of political texts and talks and other types of political
language, including those mediated via translation and/or interpreting
   - Any entry that addresses the relationship between language, media and
   politics

Interested authors can send their inquiries and/or a 250-word abstract
(together with an article title and a short bio of the author(s)) to Dr.
Jun Pan, Guest Editor of the Special Issue, atjanicepan at hkbu.eu.hk.
