Tenure-Track Elementary Literacy Faculty Position

Department of Literacy, Culture and Language Education School of Education Indiana University – Bloomington


The Department of Literacy, Culture and Language Education in the School of Education at Indiana University, the flagship campus of the Indiana University system and a major comprehensive research university, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor faculty position in elementary literacy education beginning August 2018.


Faculty and graduate student inquiry in the Department of Literacy, Culture and Language Education addresses a broad range of research including biliteracies, multiliteracies, dual language development, digital literacies, multilingual teacher preparation, early literacies, world language education, technology and critical literacy, sociocultural perspectives on language, education for democracy and diversity, immigrant and language minority education, and assessment of language and literacy development. Collaborative work with colleagues in the department, on-line and in-school settings, community organizations, and across departments of the university is especially valued.

Candidates should demonstrate excellence in research and teaching in elementary literacy; biliteracies, English as a second language, or related areas are preferred. The successful candidate will:


  *   Seek opportunities for internal and external funding for scholarship and development projects.
  *   Contribute to national and international scholarship in the field.
  *   Teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary literacy
  *   education, and cultivate field-based connections to support and enhance students’ learning experiences.


Minimum qualifications:

​• C​onduct lines of inquiry in the field of elementary literacy, biliteracies, or English as a second language that will lead to publications and other forms of knowledge distribution.

  *   Teach in a range of modalities and course delivery modes (in-person, online, and hybrid) and at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.

  *   Teach, supervise, advise, and mentor undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students.

  *   Perform service as appropriate to the department, college, university, profession, and

community.

  *   Earned doctorate in a relevant field.

  *   Evidence of strong classroom experience in grades pre-K through 6 using early literacies

or intermediate literacy methods, with emphasis on teaching linguistically diverse students (such as reading and writing workshop, emergent literacy, reading comprehension, biliterate or multiliterate development, dual language immersion education).

        • Significant experience with underserved and linguistically diverse populations.


The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in one or more of these areas of preferred qualifications:

  *   Certified to teach English Learners or literacy in K-6 schools.

  *   Proficiency in a language other than English.

  *   Expertise in assessing English Learners.

  *   Expertise in advocacy and parental outreach.

  *   Experience teaching in K-6 dual immersion language programs.

  *   Expertise in language education, language pedagogy, and language development.

  *   Experience in the development, and teaching of distance education courses, including

Evaluation criteria include:

  *   A record of scholarship in elementary literacy education or a closely related field.
  *   Successful K-12 classroom and university teaching experience.
  *   Ability and willingness to work collaboratively in support of program, school, and
  *   university advancement.
  *   Evidence of engagement in professional organizations.
