The School of Education and Communication at Jönköping University welcomes participation in the doctoral course Intersectionality Inside and Outside Schools: Theoretical and Methodological Perspectives on Multilingualism, Culture, and Identity. The 7.5 hp/ects credit course is thematized within the profile of the Communication, Culture and Diversity (CCD<https://ju.se/ccd>) network-based research group. It is open to students currently enrolled in a doctoral program, irrespective of the stage they are in their doctoral studies. Students who are not enrolled in a doctoral program may apply and will be considered depending upon their master’s profile and the course enrollment capacity.

The course focuses on ways of understanding contemporary issues of diversity in human development, inside and outside of schools, through the lens of intersectionality. The course will begin by exploring the nature of intersectionality as a concept, including its intellectual roots. It will then focus upon the ways in which intersectionality can be used conceptually to guide research that seeks to understand the related nature of multilingualism, culture, and identity in and across different settings. Empirically, conducting such intersectional research calls for data-creation and analysis across societal, institutional, interpersonal, and individual scales of social organization. Accordingly, the course will open for the examination of multi-method and multi-sited research design, including pragmatic choices between complementary methods, reflections about epistemological compatibility, and work with multiple data sources.

The course will take the format of lectures by leading international researchers together with hands-on workshops in which participants will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their doctoral proposals and work in progress. The course will also include participation at CCD’s international conference Multilingualism, Diversity and Democracy, including a stakeholder summit (MuDD 2019<https://ju.se/ccd/mudd2019>, 8-10 April). Course participants will have the opportunity to listen to critical dialogues at the MuDD research conference (8-9 April) and participate in the conference stakeholder summit (10 April) with professionals, community leaders, and policymakers in the areas of education and culture. An optional cultural activity/excursion will be open for participation on 6-7 April. Students who wish to receive credit for the course (7.5 hp/ects) may submit a written assignment related to advancing their doctoral research. Enrolled participants will receive additional details.
