Dear all,

I received an e-mail from one of my former students today who is now a P-12
ESOL specialist. It fits in well with today's theme of English Language
Day and how English is part of multilingual repertoires.

She is involved with a discussion in her school district where an argument
is being made that students learning English as an additional language
should not also enroll in modern language courses. While I can think of
much work published generally on additive language learning and
multilingual education, I am wondering if anyone is aware of any specific
scholarly work on English as a second language students in English dominant
contexts and the benefits of their taking modern language courses in
secondary and upper secondary school alongside English as additional
language courses that I could share with her.

Best,
Francis
