Position Description

Area: Language and Literacy

Duration: Two Years

Start Date: Septermber 01, 2022 or at a mutually agreeable date

Salary: $55,000 plus a research stipend of $2,500 and Plan C Postdoctoral
group health insurance benefits



The Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary is accepting
applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the area of Language and
Literacy.  The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic research
team that represents a sustained and unique voice in the field of literacy
and language learning with specific emphasis on
multi-racial/cultural/linguistic learning and pedagogy. Through their
participation in several projects, this position involves the facilitation
of a multidirectional flow and exchange of knowledge, engaging the voices
of newcomer students, teachers, school psychologists, and other
stakeholders. The postdoctoral candidate will collaborate and build
relationships within a multi-tiered framework at the micro, meso, and macro
levels. That is, they will work locally, nationally, and globally with
scholars, graduate students, classroom teachers, children, families, policy
makers, and community leaders.

This position will afford the postdoctoral associate with valuable,
detailed knowledge of and experience with the full cycle of research—from
recruitment to collaborative planning with other professionals, to data
collection, organization and analysis, and finally to knowledge
mobilization. They will benefit by being a co-author on articles published
in top international journals for the purposes of building their academic
CVs.

Job Description:

The postdoctoral associate will be working under the supervision of Dr
Rahat Zaidi and will be expected to:

    Understand the background to the work being done
    Be familiar with appropriate data collection methods for different
aspects of scholarship
    Be familiar with capturing video footage and photographs
    Collect primary data in the form of observations, artifacts and
interviews
    Participate in systematic data analyses through qualitative methods
    Be familiar with data coding procedures and use of qualitative data
analysis software
    Contribute significantly to the process of disseminating results,
including the preparation and revision of manuscripts for scholarly
journals, presentations at academic conferences, and presentations for
educators
    Reporting results in national and international journals
    Identifying funding opportunities and writing of funding applications

Qualifications:

Required:

    A doctoral degree in Education awarded within the five years
immediately preceding the appointment, with an emphasis on language and
literacy education, culturally sustaining pedagogies, ESL, or related
field,
    Training in newcomers’ language development, and/or interventions that
support newcomer learners’ language and literacy development,
    Experience working on research projects and conducting statistical
analyses, and
    Strong interpersonal, leadership, collaborative, organizational, and
writing skills.

Assets:

    Experience working within the education system, with dual language
learners and/or coaches,
    Fluency in other languages, and
    Training in qualitative research methods.
