Press Release

Language activists around the world prepare to celebrate Global Language Advocacy Day

News provided by: The Global Coalition for Language Rights

Around the world, language rights advocates are currently preparing to recognize Global Language Advocacy Day on February 22nd.

The theme of the annual event this year is ‘Language Rights Save Lives’. Activities on Global Language Advocacy Day will emphasize that respecting language rights in services like healthcare, justice, education, and emergency services can help save lives.

Dr. Gerald Roche, co-chair of the Global Coalition for Language Rights, which organizes the event, states that, “Language rights are literally a matter of life and death for millions of people all around the world today. And yet, abuse of language rights is business as usual in far too many countries. Our global day of action aims to draw attention to the drastic human consequences of violating language rights.”

This is the second year that the Global Coalition for Language Rights has organized Global Language Advocacy Day. In 2022, the event consisted of 13 initiatives, including webinars, blog posts, and more, taking place in six countries and 3 languages. Thousands of people across social media engaged with these initiatives.

In 2023, Global Language Advocacy Day will feature 35 events, from February 15 - 24. Everyone who supports language rights can follow the activities on social media using the hashtags #GLAD23 and #LanguageRightsSaveLives.
