        <p> <font size="-1" color="#003399"> The <em>Multimedia Rater Training 
          Program (MRTP)</em> is an interactive software program designed to teach 
          professionals to rate oral language proficiency. This computer-assisted 
          professional development program was modeled after live rater training 
          workshops and CAL’s self-instructional <em>Rater Training Kits</em>. 
          The <em>MRTP</em> provides a hands-on introduction to oral proficiency 
          assessment and teaches rating skills conveniently and effectively via 
          CD-ROM. </p>
        <p>The program begins with training in the use of the ACTFL Proficiency 
          Guidelines–Speaking and then teaches users how to rate examinee 
          performances on the <em>Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview</em>, a 
          tape-mediated test of oral proficiency.<br>
          <strong><br>
          The Spanish version is now available. French and German versions will 
          be available in 2006. </strong> </p>

        <font size="-1" color="#003399"> English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS)</font><BR>
        <BR>
        <font face="verdana, arial" color="#003399" size="-2">CAL is pleased to 
        announce the initiation of the pilot year of its EHLS program. EHLS will 
        enable adults who are native speakers of critical languages to acquire 
        the English language proficiency they need to function effectively in 
        government and business positions in the United States. In this pilot 
        year, the program will recruit native speakers of Arabic, Chinese, and 
        Russian to participate. Iinstruction will take place at the University 
        of Washington in Seattle and at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. 
        <p>Funding for the EHLS program comes from the National Security Education 
          Program in the U.S. Department of Defense. Competitive scholarships 
          will be available to individuals who meet the language qualifications, 
          are U.S. citizens, and are willing to commit to work for 1 year within 
          the federal government.</p>
