The successful applicant will propose a research project that<BR>is compatible with ongoing works in the area of language acquisition at<BR>CASTL. (see<BR><A href="http://castl.uit.no/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=14&Itemid=72">http://castl.uit.no/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=14&Itemid=72</A>).<BR><BR>CASTL is a Norwegian Center of Excellence funded by the Research Council of<BR>Norway and the University of Tromsų. The core scientific group of the<BR>center currently consists of 6 senior researchers, 6 post-docs/researchers<BR>and 17 PhD students. The research group in acquisition currently includes a<BR>full-time professor, 2 part-time professors, and 3 post-doctoral research<BR>fellows.<BR><BR>CASTL's primary research activity is within generative grammar with a focus<BR>on syntax, phonology, and language acquisition. CASTL also runs a Graduate<BR>School in theoretical linguistics. The person hired in the advertised<BR>research fellowship is expected to follow the program of the Graduate<BR>School and to complete a doctoral dissertation.<BR><BR>The PhD project in bilingual language acquisition will be integrated into<BR>the ongoing work of the acquisition group, the VIA project (Variation in<BR>the Input in Acquisition). The focus of the PhD project may be on any two<BR>language combinations, e.g. Norwegian/Russian, Norwegian/Saami,<BR>Norwegian/English, etc. Applicants must submit a project description (5-7<BR>page) outlining a possible dissertation project.<BR><BR>The period of appointment is four years. The PhD study is standardized to<BR>three years. The fourth year consists of teaching or other duties for the<BR>university, organized according to a distribution formula of 25 % per year.<BR><BR>The successful applicant will have to document qualifications in<BR>linguistics at the Master's level. Applicants will be assessed by an expert<BR>committee. The main emphasis of the assessment will be on the applicant's<BR>potential for research, as evident from: Master's thesis or equivalent,<BR>other scholarly works and project description.
