<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">The interdisciplinary Language, Literacy and Culture (LLC) Ph.D. Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor beginning August 23, 2011. LLC is an interdisciplinary program of study of language, culture, human interaction and communication with faculty from seven departments: Africana Studies; American Studies; Education; English; Gender and Women’s Studies; Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication; and Sociology and Anthropology. </P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="mso-tab-count: 1"> </SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Applicants must have an earned doctorate in one of the participating disciplines or a closely related field, administrative experience, and a successful research and teaching agenda in one of the following areas: </P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="mso-tab-count: 1"> </SPAN>Language, literacy, discourse or applied linguistics</P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="mso-tab-count: 1"> </SPAN>Media, multiliteracies, or globalized communication</P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="mso-tab-count: 1"> </SPAN>Identity, culture, ethnicity, race or area studies</P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Major responsibilities include teaching core and seminar courses, research, academic advising, and chairing and serving on Ph.D. dissertation committees. </P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o:p> </o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Since its beginning in 1998, the program has awarded 45 Ph.D.s, and it currently has over 60 students. Through courses and seminars, internships and research, students in the program investigate ways in which social structure, social and cultural assumptions, and language use affect interactions among members of different social and cultural groups and impact upon educational and training programs, communications systems, and public policy formulation. </P>
