<p class=MsoNormal><i><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span
style='font-size:12.0pt;font-style:italic'>Language Policy</span></font></i> is
planning a thematic issue on how policies at local, national, and transnational
levels are enacting and enforcing the high status of English academic
publishing and the impact of such policies on scholars and students, research
and teaching, and institutional practices in different geographical contexts. English
is often viewed as the <i><span style='font-style:italic'>lingua franca</span></i>
of scholarly publishing in many disciplines, particularly in the sciences and
social sciences. The rise of English as the presumed global medium of scholarly
publication has resulted in both obvious and less obvious consequences for
individual scholars and for the enterprise of knowledge production. We invite empirical
and theoretical papers that examine the effects and enactments of these
policies and explore the consequences for knowledge making globally.<o:p></o:p></p>

12.0pt'>For consideration for this issue, please send an abstract of up to 300
words to Mary Jane Curry (mjcurry@warner.rochester.edu), who will co-edit the
issue with Theresa Lillis. For empirical papers, the abstract should identify
the geolinguistic context of the research, the research question/focus, the
theoretical framing, and a synopsis of findings.<b><span style='font-weight:
bold'> </span></b>For theoretical papers, the abstract should describe the
issue under consideration, the theoretical framing, and the conclusions to be
drawn. If the abstract is accepted, you will be invited to submit a paper due
January 1, 2012, which will undergo normal peer review procedures. The issue is
scheduled for publication in early 2013. <i><span style='font-style:italic'>Language
Policy</span></i> is a peer-reviewed journal included in the Institute for
Scientific Information (ISI) database.</span></font><span
