<DIV><FONT size=2>CALPIU12 Higher Education across Borders: Transcultural Interaction<BR>and Linguistic Diversity<BR><BR><BR>Full Title: CALPIU12 Higher Education across Borders: Transcultural<BR>Interaction and Linguistic Diversity<BR>Short Title: CALPIU'12<BR><BR>Date: 01-Apr-2012 - 04-Apr-2012<BR>Location: Roskilde, Denmark<BR>Contact Person: Julie de Molade<BR>Meeting Email: < click here to access email ><BR>Web Site: <A href="http://www.calpiu12.dk/">http://www.calpiu12.dk</A><BR><BR>Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Sociolinguistics<BR><BR>Call Deadline: 16-Aug-2011<BR><BR>Meeting Description:<BR><BR>CALPIU'12 is the second open conference arranged by the CALPIU<BR>Research Centre for the Study of Cultural and Linguistic Practices in<BR>the International University. The aim of CALPIU'12 is to discuss<BR>various aspects of the consequences of transnational student mobility.<BR><BR>Student mobility makes necessary both cultural and linguistic<BR>accommodation and learning processes. We are witnessing a huge<BR>increase in the learning of languages to be used as lingua francas by<BR>academic teachers and students, not least English the 'language of<BR>globalization'.<BR><BR>However, forces of localization, too, are manifest at every university<BR>trying to adopt internationalization strategies, the tension between<BR>the global and the local - uniformity and diversification - creating a<BR>multidimensional space for new kinds of cultural and linguistic<BR>hybridity to flourish.<BR><BR>There is a new open-mindedness regarding the roles and identities of<BR>self and others, leading to new patterns of linguistic/interactive,<BR>educational and social practices. We aim to further the theoretical<BR>understanding of these processes, those of active and receptive<BR>multilingualism, as well as language alternation in interaction.<BR><BR>Keynote Speakers:<BR><BR>- François Grin, Université de Genève, Switzerland<BR>- Andy Kirkpatrick, Hong Kong Institute of Education, China<BR>- Joan Turner, Goldsmiths College, University of London, Great Britain<BR><BR>Round Table:<BR><BR>In addition to the keynote speakers, the conference will feature a<BR>round table of invited speakers who will present and discuss various<BR>approaches to multilingualism in the international university. The<BR>panelists are:<BR><BR>- Hanne Leth Andersen, Roskilde University, Denmark (University Vice<BR>President, Panel Chair)<BR>- François Grin, Université de Genève, Switzerland<BR>- Peter Harder, University of Copenhagen, Denmark<BR>- Andy Kirkpatrick, Hong Kong Institute of Education, China<BR>- Jan K. Lindström, University of Helsinki, Finland<BR>- Jean-Jacques Weber, University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg<BR><BR>Registration<BR><BR>Deadline for final registration is February 1, 2012. Details about<BR>venue, accommodation, etc. can be found on the menu bar on<BR>www.calpiu12.dk<BR><BR>Call for Papers:<BR><BR>Deadline for submission: 16 August, 2011<BR><BR>Proposals are invited for individual papers (200-250 words) and should<BR>be submitted for refereeing by August 16, 2011. This includes<BR>contributions to pre-arranged panels.<BR><BR>Papers that are not submitted as part of pre-arranged panels will be<BR>arranged into thematically coherent panels by the conference<BR>organizers. The thematic panels will be issued with a panel chair (not<BR>just a session chair) and the panelists will be asked to coordinate<BR>their presentations before the conference. Panels will be organized in<BR>slots of either 90 or 120 minutes and will typically consist of 3 or 4<BR>papers.<BR><BR>Topics for Panels and Papers:<BR><BR>We welcome all proposals that address the general conference theme.<BR><BR>The following list is provided as inspiration for topics that could<BR>potentially be addressed under the headings of cultural and linguistic<BR>practices in the international university and transnational student<BR>mobility in higher education:<BR><BR>- Multilingualism in higher education<BR>- Teaching and learning in 'another language'<BR>- Lingua francas in higher education<BR>- Interactional competence in the international university<BR>- Transnational mobility and local languages<BR>- Cultural reflexivity and intercultural dynamics<BR>- Social life in a multilingual institutional context<BR>- Institutional roles and authenticity<BR>- Language policy and ideology<BR>- Collecting and working with multilingual data and corpora<BR>- Methods for studying linguistic and cultural diversity<BR><BR>All these topics can be dealt with from the perspective of the four<BR>fields of practice in the international university that CALPIU<BR>investigates:<BR><BR>- The communicative practice and self-conception of the university as<BR>an actor in a multilingual world<BR>- Student-teacher interactions<BR>- Student-student interactions<BR>- Student-Administrative staff interactions<BR><BR>Author Guidelines:<BR><BR>Abstracts of all individual papers (200-250 words incl. r
