It is a wonderful opportunity for bilingual students, who have completed their B.A. and are interested in teaching science. Adelphi University received funding through Race to the Top to develop a residency program for bilingual (Spanish or Haitian Creole) students with an an M.A. and a strong science background. Candidates will engage in a clinically based, hands-on training in support of the national shortage of bilingual science educators.<br><br>Project BEST offers a wealth of benefits, including the opportunity to earn a master's degree, mentorship from esteemed professionals and a substantial stipend<br>and living allowance. <p>A joint partnership with Adelphi University, and the Westbury and
Roosevelt School Districts, Project BEST is a New York State Race to the
Top funded grant program that prepares qualified bilingual candidates
for a fulfilling career in science education through clinically rich
study and practice.</p>
<p>The U.S. Department of Education Awards Race to the Top money to
programs that are leading the way with ambitious yet achievable plans
for implementing coherent, compelling, and comprehensive education
reform.</p>
<p>Project BEST is a residency program that provides intensive and in-depth teacher education. Other benefits include:</p>
<ul><li>$10,000 tuition stipend and $30,000 living allowance while earning
an M.A. in Science Education, with initial New York State certification
(grades 7-12) in a science discipline (biology, earth science, physics,
or chemistry) and a bilingual extension</li><li>Mentorship by highly qualified teachers and university faculty through a one-year full-time teaching residency</li><li>Involvement with the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)</li></ul>
<p>Students must be bilingual in Spanish or Haitian Creole, hold a
bachelor's degree with a strong science background, and commit to
teaching in a high-needs district after program completion.</p>
