LANGUAGE learning should be promoted for global citizenship, not just for economic reasons in the Asian century, according to Australia's arts deans.

<p>"Language learning, regardless of language, has a significant impact on general literacy, cultural awareness, understanding and communication," Krishna Sen, president of the arts deans, says in a letter to Asian century minister Craig Emerson.</p>
