<p>Thank you for your input about the Edling List. As you know, Edling serves many functions. Discussion is one of them. It also serves as a forum for announcing events, news, calls for papers, etc. Different members have different needs of the list, and
I try to do my best to balance them.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>In this case, I received feedback from several list members regarding the volume of messages relating to the discussion (which lasted about two weeks). Since few comments had been made toward the end of this time, it seemed reasonable to wind down the discussion.
The intent was certainly not to "limit the free expression of ideas." Rather, the intent was to round off the discussion just as one does after the Q&A portion of a conference talk. Edling is a moderated scholarly forum.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>List members are absolutely encouraged to post their ideas, comments, announcements, etc. at any time. Likewise, feedback about the list is also always welcome.</p>

<div dir="ltr">I'm sorry but I don't understand the desire to "officially close the current discussion" Francis. This seems extremely paternalistic and condescending to say the least. Forums such as this one are meant to continue discussion, not to abort it
after someone like yourself decides it is over. This is not "moderating", it is controlling in the worst sense of the word and smacks of limiting the free expression of ideas and dare we say it, free speech itself. Don't "close"this discussion. Let it roll!</div>

conversation about current hot button issues in our field. The generally civil and professional nature of the postings in this discussion is also much appreciated.</p>
