Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have recently drawn a lot of attention across the world among teachers, scholars, and academic institutions. While MOOC providers, media outlets, and some teachers/scholars have viewed the phenomenon as a positive advancement in higher education, many scholars are worried that MOOCs might ultimately undermine the qualities and values that sustain higher education within and across national borders more significantly than they contribute positively. Teachers and scholars in different contexts and countries need to broaden and deepen the conversation so that the positive potentials are realized while also recognizing the pitfalls of this advancement.
