</span></b><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Second language (L2) studies in recent years has seen a growing interest in the role that texts play in L2 development. Traced back in large part to the New London Group’s (1996) call for increased pedagogical attention
 to the multiple media and modalities that language users now must mediate in order to communicate meaningfully, this “literacy turn” in the profession has resulted in both an expanding understanding of texts as well as an increased focus on fundamental aspects
 of textual analysis (e.g., context, author, audience, purpose, structure). Relatively absent from the discussions about text-based approaches to L2 development are the assessment practices needed to understand the types of student learning that take place
 through textual engagement. This strand therefore invites papers that examine the assessment of student learning and L2 development within text-based pedagogies and curricula. Possible paper topics could include, but are not limited to, the assessment of the

 in language studies programs; and (3) useful assessment of language and humanities education. The conference begins with an opening luncheon on Saturday, October 28th, followed by presentations and discussion. The first day concludes with a late-afternoon
 keynote address by John Norris and dinner. Presentations and discussions continue on Sunday, October 29th.  Discussions will be facilitated by an invited scholar with expertise in the respective strand. The conference ends with a box lunch and a “strategy
