<p>Applying insights from modern linguistics to language teaching and teacher</p>
<p><br>
education is anything but new. However, recent years have seen a development</p>
<p><br>
of approaches within modern linguistics that aim to reach out and engage more</p>
<p><br>
actively with the field of language pedagogy. Given the conceptual background</p>
<p><br>
of established language-teaching methodologies such as Communicative Language</p>
<p><br>
Teaching or Critical Pedagogy, modern teacher education has shifted from the</p>
<p><br>
rigorous study of language structure to a focus on communicative and</p>
<p><br>
sociolinguistic underpinnings of teaching languages in a classroom. Our</p>
<p><br>
workshop aims at building new bridges that close the gap between this ‘social</p>
<p><br>
turn’ in educational linguistics and modern formal approaches to natural</p>
<p><br>
language, to eventually explore new teaching methodologies.</p>
<p><br>
</p>

</p>
<p>We are particularly interested in current accounts in the language sciences</p>
<p><br>
that systematically revise and manipulate existing teaching methods in the</p>
<p><br>
second language classroom and that explore how different manipulations</p>
<p><br>
</p>
<p>facilitate the learning of a second language. In many linguistic approaches to</p>
<p><br>
second language acquisition, language teaching is already being used as an</p>
<p><br>
important variable –- and from here it is but a short step to developing</p>
<p><br>
psychologically sound teaching materials for language pedagogy. The overall</p>
<p><br>
goal of this workshop is to see a subsequent integration of issues and</p>
<p><br>
</p>
<p>insights from modern linguistics into language-teaching practice.</p>
