Hello,

My name is Alex Baratta, a sociolinguist at the University of Manchester, and I wanted to provide information regarding my upcoming book, which may be of interest and relevance to sociolinguists and Educational linguists. The link is below:

https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/accent-and-teacher-identity-in-britain-9781350054929/

The book focuses on the results of several studies that I have conducted which investigate the role that accent plays in the construction of a professional identity in British teaching. The results show that teachers from the North/Midlands are the ones
who, in the main, are being told to modify their accents, with several teachers being given specific phonological information. The book ties in to the larger issue of language preference and notions of standard language (here, accent), and it also sheds light
on what the phonological implications are for accents deemed to be 'broad', 'posh' and so on, as well as the implications for identity when teachers are essentially told how to speak.

Thanks for your consideration.

Kind regards,

Alex
