<span style="font-size: 10pt;">Intercultural exchange has always been an integral part of language learning. When students come into contact with other cultures they develop both intercultural and linguistic competence as well as a wide range of soft skills
that are key to preparing for a globally interdependent world. However, study abroad is not feasible for all students - the European objective of 20% mobility in 2020 is a long way off. Virtual exchange, “technology-enabled, sustained, people to people education”<a name="_ednref1" title="" href="#_edn1"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">[1]</span></span></span></a>
is thus a means of providing intercultural, international experience through online projects in formal or informal settings often for contexts where there is little opportunity for mobility or study abroad.
</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; -ms-text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-size: 10pt;">There is currently a sustained push to support and develop virtual exchange in education across Europe and beyond. In 2018, the European Commission launched the
<i>Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange</i> initiative for youth across Europe and the Southern Mediterranean with the intention of expanding the reach and scope of the Erasmus+ programme via virtual exchange. According to the Commission, the
<i>Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange</i> initiative “is expected to create an engaging and safe online community where young people can participate in facilitated discussions, increase their intercultural awareness and extend their competences”<a name="_ednref2" title="" href="#_edn2"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">[2]</span></span></span></a>.
The target for this initiative is to reach 8000 youth in 2018. </span></p>

<p class="MsoCommentText" style="text-align: justify; -ms-text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<i><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange</span></i><span style="font-size: 10pt;"> is just one of a number of initiatives currently supporting online collaboration in higher education (see also the work of
<i>UNICollaboration</i><a name="_ednref3" title="" href="#_edn3"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">[3]</span></span></span></a>, the
<i>EVALUATE</i> project<a name="_ednref4" title="" href="#_edn4"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">[4]</span></span></span></a>). In school contexts, forms of virtual exchange have been implemented
through <i>eTwinning</i><a name="_ednref5" title="" href="#_edn5"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">[5]</span></span></span></a>, a European project which has grown exponentially in recent years,
and through the work of international organizations such as <i>iEARN</i><a name="_ednref6" title="" href="#_edn6"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">[6]</span></span></span></a> . Online international
collaboration can take many forms - in class to class projects, across or within disciplines, across multiple classes with the support of external organizations, bringing students together or bringing students into contact with the diversity of people and
contexts outside educational contexts, in combination with physical exchanges or not. These diverse approaches to intercultural dialogue offer a way of putting into practice a vision of the learner as ‘a social agent’<a name="_ednref7" title="" href="#_edn7"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">[7]</span></span></span></a>
by providing safe, constructive online contexts where they can build on their pluricultural and plurilingual repertories. The challenge lies in addressing the issue of language in such a way as to maximise these opportunities and avoid linguistic hegemonies.</span></p>

<span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">L’échange interculturel fait depuis toujours partie intégrante de l’apprentissage d’une langue. Le contact avec une autre culture permet de développer des compétences linguistiques et interculturelles mais aussi de construire
tout un éventail de compétences transverses qui aideront l’étudiant à appréhender l’interdépendance globale que nous connaissons aujourd’hui. Cependant, la mobilité internationale n’est pas à la portée de tous : nous sommes loin d’atteindre l’objectif européen
pour 2020 d’amener 20% d’étudiants à effectuer une partie de leurs études en mobilité. L’échange virtuel ou « l’éducation par le prisme interpersonnel, facilité et entretenu/soutenu par la technologie </span><span lang="FR">»<a name="_ednref8" title="" href="#_edn8"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 12pt;">[8]</span></span></span></a> </span><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">
nous donne la possibilité de proposer une expérience internationale et interculturelle, à travers des projets en ligne, formels ou informels, adaptés à des contextes peu propices aux séjours d’étude à l’étranger.

<span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">On observe aujourd’hui, dans le monde de l’éducation, une volonté soutenue de développer et promouvoir l’échange virtuel au sein de<span style="color: rgb(0, 176, 80);"></span>l’Europe et au-delà. La Commission Européenne
a lancé, en 2018, une initiative pour la jeunesse européenne et sud-méditerranéenne intitulée
<i>Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange</i>. Selon la Commission, cette initiative « devrait créer une communauté en ligne, à la fois conviviale et sûre, au sein de laquelle des étudiants peuvent prendre part à des discussions facilitées, accroitre leur sensibilité interculturelle
et enrichir leurs compétences. »<a name="_ednref9" title="" href="#_edn9"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">[9]</span></span></span></a> Le nombre de jeunes visé par cette initiative
est 8000 en 2018.</span></p>

<i><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange</span></i><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;"> n’est qu’une initiative parmi celle déployées actuellement dans le but de promouvoir la collaboration en ligne dans l’enseignement supérieur
(voir, par exemple, UNICollaboration</span><a name="_ednref10" title="" href="#_edn10"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">[10]</span></span></span></span></a><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">,
le projet EVALUATE<a name="_ednref11" title="" href="#_edn11"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">[11]</span></span></span></a>). Dans les contextes d’enseignement secondaire, des échanges
virtuels ont vu le jour grâce à <i>eTwinning<a name="_ednref12" title="" href="#_edn12"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><b><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">[12]</span></b></span></span></a>,</i> un projet européen
qui a connu une croissance exponentielle ces dernières années, ainsi qu’au travail mené par des organismes internationaux tels que iEARN<a name="_ednref13" title="" href="#_edn13"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">[13]</span></span></span></a>.
La collaboration internationale en ligne prend des formes très diverses : projets interdisciplinaires ou disciplinaires, échanges entre classes avec le soutien d’organisations externes, entre étudiants, ou bien favorisant la découverte de publics et de contextes
divers au-delà du cadre éducatif, s’accompagnant ou non de prises de contact dans le monde réel/physique/non-virtuel/hors ligne.</span><span lang="FR"></span><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">Ces différentes modalités de dialogue interculturel rendent
possible la concrétisation de la vision de l’apprenant comme « acteur social »<a name="_ednref14" title="" href="#_edn14"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span class="MsoEndnoteReference"><span lang="FR" style="font-size: 10pt;">[14]</span></span></span></a>
en lui donnant accès à des contextes en ligne sûrs et constructifs où il peut mobiliser et élargir ses répertoires de compétences pluriculturelles et plurilingues. L’un des défis majeurs que doivent relever ces projets est bien celui des langues : comment
tirer le meilleur profit des opportunités qu’ils offrent tout en conservant une approche multilingue et en évitant donc l’écueil hégémonique ? </span></p>
