with multilingualism in their classrooms. Meeting the challenge of increasing (linguistic) diversity is a task for nearly all European education systems. In order to adequately address multilingual classrooms, teachers need to be equipped with the knowledge
and skills to handle and facilitate multilingualism. Multilingualism thus needs to be integrated into teacher education. This is realized in different ways in different countries, and even within countries that have different teacher education institutions.
What can be observed is an increase in awareness and initiatives to meet the challenges of today’s heterogeneous classrooms. For instance, in Germany, the Ministry for Education and Research has provided major funding in order to raise the quality of teacher
