 Symposium on World Language Education (SOWLE) is an annual conference 
that provides language teaching professionals with opportunities to 
discuss current trends and issues in world language education. The 
Symposium is hosted by the Graduate School of Translation, 
Interpretation, and Language Education (GSTILE) at the Middlebury 
Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). (SOWLE was 
formally known as the Foreign Language Education Symposium–FLEDS).</p><p>The
 Symposium will be held virtually on February 5th & 12th, 2022. 
Since this year’s symposium will be hosted completely online, presenters
 and attendees can participate from all around the world! Registration 
for this event includes access to both days of the symposium.</p><p>This year’s symposium theme is “Promoting Equity and Leadership in the Language Classroom”.</p><p>The
 SOWLE Committee members believe that in order to promote equity and 
leadership in the classroom, world language teachers must actively adapt
 their lessons and classroom communities to better serve the interests 
and needs of their students. This can be approached through fostering 
leadership strategies to address inequality still present in our 
disciplines and institutions.</p><p>Registration is required to 
participate, but registration for students will be free of charge. In an
 effort to continue these important conversations regarding the field of
 language education, the $5 USD registration fee for faculty and 
professionals will serve as donations to the <a href="https://www.middlebury.edu/institute/academics/degree-programs/language-education/overview/van-lier-lecture-series" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Leo van Lier Speaker Series</a>,
 which brings preeminent scholars in the field of applied linguistics to
 campus to share their expertise on current issues in language 
education. The department intends to invite guest speakers who have 
conducted research on equitable world language education for upcoming 
events.</p><p>The SOWLE Planning Committee consists of five graduate 
students in the Language Education department’s “Leadership in Language 
Education” course taught by Professor Kathi Bailey, who is also the 
faculty advisor for SOWLE 2022.</p><p>In addition to the two days of 
conference presentations, on Friday, February 11, there will be a panel 
discussing the contributions Dr. van Lier made to the field of language 
education, as a researcher, author, teacher, and language teacher
