Symposium on World Language Education (SOWLE) is an annual conference
that provides language teaching professionals with opportunities to
discuss current trends and issues in world language education. The
Symposium is hosted by the Graduate School of Translation,
Interpretation, and Language Education (GSTILE) at the Middlebury
Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). (SOWLE was
formally known as the Foreign Language Education Symposium–FLEDS).

The
Symposium will be held virtually on February 5th & 12th, 2022.
Since this year’s symposium will be hosted completely online, presenters
and attendees can participate from all around the world! Registration
for this event includes access to both days of the symposium.

This year’s symposium theme is “Promoting Equity and Leadership in the Language Classroom”.

The
SOWLE Committee members believe that in order to promote equity and
leadership in the classroom, world language teachers must actively adapt
their lessons and classroom communities to better serve the interests
and needs of their students. This can be approached through fostering
leadership strategies to address inequality still present in our
disciplines and institutions.

Registration is required to
participate, but registration for students will be free of charge. In an
effort to continue these important conversations regarding the field of
language education, the $5 USD registration fee for faculty and
professionals will serve as donations to the Leo van Lier Speaker Series,
which brings preeminent scholars in the field of applied linguistics to
campus to share their expertise on current issues in language
education. The department intends to invite guest speakers who have
conducted research on equitable world language education for upcoming
events.

The SOWLE Planning Committee consists of five graduate
students in the Language Education department’s “Leadership in Language
Education” course taught by Professor Kathi Bailey, who is also the
faculty advisor for SOWLE 2022.

In addition to the two days of
conference presentations, on Friday, February 11, there will be a panel
discussing the contributions Dr. van Lier made to the field of language
education, as a researcher, author, teacher, and language teacher
educator.

If you have any questions, please email the SOWLE
Committee at contact.sowle@gmail.com. Add us to your contacts to avoid
our messages going to your spam folder." at the bottom of the event
