Modern linguistics sees the relationships between spoken and written language as well as standard language and language varieties as dynamic and changeable. An awareness of such flexibility is essential to promote a useful dialogue between creativity, appropriateness
and convention in language. All of which is important to teachers in supporting learners to become confident and resourceful communicators.

This nuanced approach to Knowledge About Language (KAL) is, however, not always consistently reflected in current teaching, learning and assessment practices, where the focus on ‘correctness’ dominates. In turn, this narrows student skills-development, thus
limiting their potential as resourceful and confident language users.
