Learning cursive in school, long scorned as obsolete, is now the law in
California

Even before the new law took effect on Jan. 1, cursive was a California
learning goal in grades 3 and 4, but the state and school districts had not
enforced its teaching or tested to see whether students had mastered it.
Moving forward, handwriting instruction for grades 1 to 6 is to include
writing ?in cursive or joined italics in the appropriate grade levels,? the
law states.

The directive leaves room for flexibility. Pasadena Unified will begin
cursive in second grade, setting aside first grade for students to learn to
print.
Dear EdLing members,

I am delighted to let you know that our new book, Teaching English as an International Language, co-authored with two brilliant scholars, Nicola Galloway (Glasgow) and Heath Rose (Oxford), has just been published as part of the Elements in Language Teaching series by Cambridge University Press.

SummaryThis Element offers a comprehensive account of the unprecedented spread of English as a global language by taking historical, sociolinguistic, and pedagogical perspectives. To realize this mission, it opens with an accessible discussion of the historical trajectory of the English language with qualitative and quantitative connections to its contemporary diversity in terms of forms, roles, functions, uses, users, and contexts of English as a global and multilingual franca. Built upon this synchronic-diachronic symbiosis, the discussion is complemented by an overview of major analytical paradigms and trends that promote systematical scrutiny of the English language and its sociolinguistic and educational implications. It ends by showcasing instructional practices, recommendations, reflective questions, and future directions for language educators to revamp their beliefs, commitments, and practices considering the changing needs and realities of the present-day global sociolingui
stic ecology and individuals therein.

The book is available for download until January 5, 2024: https://doi.org/10.1017/9781108902755

We hope you find it relevant, interesting, and useful... Please consider sharing it with your interested colleagues and students in your networks.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year ahead!

Warm regards,Ali Fuad Selvi
Flagship public universities likely to cut more humanities, staff ?
especially in rural states

Missouri Western State University has eliminated dozens of majors and
minors including English, history, philosophy, political science,
economics, sociology, art, Spanish and French. Eastern Kentucky University
shut theater programs and economics. The State University of New York at
Potsdam is also cutting degree programs, including in art history, dance,
French, Spanish and theater.

More cuts could be coming. The Kansas Board of Regents announced in June it
is reviewing proposals to eliminate programs at the six state universities.
The review is meant ?to ensure that programs meet student demand, improve
student affordability, support Kansas communities and help meet the state?s
workforce needs.? A decision is expected in 2024 on which programs to cut
or consolidate, said Matt Keith, spokesperson for the Kansas Board of
Regents.
Florida school book bans hit dictionaries
A Florida school district is pulling nearly 2,000 books from its shelves ?
including some dictionaries and encyclopedias ? to make sure they abide by
a new state law...Meehan said in a statement shared with Axios that "it's
likely librarians were responding to vague language and responded with
extreme caution given the chilled environment in Florida, and especially
Escambia School District, over book access."
Colleagues,

I?m pleased to share an experiment with an alternative form of research dissemination ? short (5-min) animated videos. My colleagues Sovicheth Boun, Virak Chan, and I worked with a company called SciTube to produce a video based on our article on Multilingual Education in Cambodia which was published in Educational Linguistics (Vol. 1., No. 1). The idea is folks who are unlikely to read a 30-page academic journal article may be willing to watch a 5-minute animated video.

You can check it out at:
Would love to hear your thoughts ? positive or negative ? about this form of research dissemination!
