In this article, we argue that language teachers need a different conversation about generative AI ¡ª one that moves beyond efficiency and productivity and instead centers pedagogy, ethics, equity, and human judgment. Drawing on a human-centered approach, we
introduce the Position¨CDesign¨CEnact (PDE) framework, which encourages educators to think critically about how AI is positioned in classroom ecologies, how learning tasks are intentionally designed, and how AI-supported interactions unfold in practice. Across
all three dimensions, we emphasize the importance of criticality, including questions of language ideologies, representation and bias, authority and agency, and ownership and ethics.</div>
