Re-visiting the State of Indigenous Languages: AILDI 2013 National Conference

June 17 & 18, 2013

The American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI) at the University of Arizona is hosting a national conference on Indigenous languages on June 17 and 18, 2013, 'Re-visiting the State of Indigenous Languages.' In addition to an exciting set of invited talks by leading scholars and community language experts, we are soliciting posters and demonstrations that address this topic. Posters, demonstration/ exhibit sessions from indigenous community members are strongly encouraged. (Questions should be directed to Colleen Fitzgerald; see below for contact information.)
The purpose of the conference is to re-assess and re-evaluate the status of Indigenous languages.  The conference will address three key questions related to the vitality of US Indigenous languages: where have we been, what do we know and where are we going? These questions will be applied to the Native American Language Act, language documentation and pedagogical trends. The conference provides an opportunity to make a critical examination of the history of Indigenous language vitality, existing documentation and the various methodologies that have been adopted and practiced in an effort to save these languages.
Posters and demonstration/exhibit sessions on these questions and other topics on the status of Indigenous languages are scheduled, and abstracts from indigenous community members are especially encouraged.  The deadline for abstracts for this session is March 25, 2013.  We seek presenters on the state of Indigenous languages, not only as traditional academics posters (see LSA poster presentation guidelines at, but also as more practical-oriented demonstration or exhibit sessions from Indigenous language programs.  Abstracts indicate the nature of their poster/demonstration/exhibit, with possible topics ranging from curriculum, teaching materials, software, databases, dictionaries, and more.
Abstracts should be between  300-500 words and include a title and whether the presenter is doing a poster or a demonstration/exhibit.  Contact details, including institutional affiliation (university, tribe, or both), must be included. Poster presentations are especially encouraged from students and community language program teams who want to present work-in-progress or receive more individual feedback.
