how to use E prime to display symbols and allowing participants to influence their shape?

Stock reminder: 1) I do not work for PST. 2) PST's trained staff
takes any and all questions at
http://support.pstnet.com/e%2Dprime/support/login.asp , and they
strive to respond to all requests in 24-48 hours -- this is pretty
much their substitute for proper documentation, so make full use of
it. 3) If you do get an answer from PST Web Support, please extend
the courtesy of posting their reply back here for the sake of others.

That said, here is my take...

Without going into detail, you can use the Stretch property of any
ImageDisplay or SlideImage object to make the image fit into any
given Width and Height, and you can set the Width and Height
properties (on the Frame tab) using attribute references. From there
it is just a matter of collecting responses from the keyboard, mouse,
joystick, or whatever, and using c.SetAttrib to manipulate the
attributes for Width and Height. This will of course require a fair
amount of inline code (with global variables, etc.).

If you don't know what any of that means, then first please work
through all the tutorials in the Getting Started Guide and User's
Guide that came with E-Prime.
