I suspect you mean you exported from Excel to tab-delimited text file (as you actually say a bit later on). A quotation mark can appear if a number in excel, stored in a “general format” cell, is to be treated as text: I.e. 128 is a number, ‘128 are three letters. Sounds dumb, but I love doing it this way, same goes for converting stuff to SPSS.
