Subject: ROLSI article

Readers of this list will find this recent publication of interest:

R. Townsend (2009). Town meeting as a communication event. Research on
Language and Social Interaction, 42, pp. 68-89.

The article is an ethnographic examination of New England "town
meeting" as a speech event, drawing attention to its sequencing, and
normative structuring of democratic decision-making and deliberation.
Implications are drawn for ethno-rhetorical studies of local political
communication; questions are raised about "democratic theorists'
idealist notions of local democracy."
