Fwd: Ethnography of Communication Conference

Dear Colleagues,

The summer of 2012 will mark the 50th year anniversary of Dell Hymes' 1962
publication, "the ethnography of speaking." It also marks the 25th
anniversary of Gerry Philipsen's 1987 chapter, "The Prospect for Cultural
Communication." There are other milestones led by scholarship, collegial
relations, friendships, and so on that warrant a gathering of those with
ties to the ethnography of communication.

Preliminary planning has begun for a conference being hosted by Jay Leighter
at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. The working title for the
conference is "The Ethnography of Communication: The Ways Forward" and the
tentative dates for the conference are June 10-14, 2012. This avoids ICA,
Memorial Day, Father's Day, some graduations and other potential
complications as far as we know.

Knowing we won't please everyone with the dates, we want to hear from those
interested so that we may begin to plan the conference.

We apologize in advance for the somewhat haphazard nature of this inquiry.
Please forward to others who you think may be interested. The idea is to
include anyone interested - within some constraints of local arrangement
which are not quite clear to us yet.
